Package Boilers

During the past 60 years we have supplied over 4 000 firetube boilers to customers in many industries in Africa, Europe, South-East Asia, the Middle East, South America and Australia.

All of our boilers now incorporate spiral-tube technology, developed in our test centre. This enhances thermal efficiency and reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The boilers are designed and manufactured in compliance with the latest international standard, EN12953.

An Approved Inspection Authority inspects and certifies each piece of equipment before dispatch.

Thompson Europac Coal-Fired

Designed and manufactured to latest European Standard (EN12953) for a design pressure of 1 100 kPa (Designs also available up to 2 000 kPa)
Three-pass conventional firetube wet-back design with spiral tubes in both tube passes
Flanged end-plates in place of flat end-plates on selected boilers eliminate tee-butt weld joints. This reduces susceptibility to corrosion fatigue and extends boiler life
Latest spiral-tube technology with heat transfer up to 100% greater than normal plain tubes reduces gas outlet temperature to only 15°C above steam saturation temperature
Thermal efficiency of 84% with GCV 27 500 kJ/kg provides 10 kg steam per kg coal
MICROPAC energy management system increases efficiency and reduces operating and maintenance costs
Variable-speed drives for FD fan, ID fan, feed-pumps and stoker reduce power consumption
Total package incorporates chaingrate stoker, feed-water pumps and controls, control panel, grit collector, fans and all necessary valves and fittings

Thompson Enviropac Oil/Gas-Fired

Designed and manufactured to latest European Standard (EN12953) for a design pressure of 1 100 kPa (Designs also available up to 2 500 kPa)

Thompson Redipac Oil/Gas-Fired

Three-pass, reverse-flame, wet-back design with a low furnace rating
High thermal efficiency of up to 90% when oil-fired and 89% when gas-fired
Combustion equipment to suit a wide range of oil viscosities and gas compositions
Designed and manufactured to latest European Standard (EN12953) for a design pressure of 1 100 kPa. (Designs also available up to 3 000 kPa)
Total package incorporates burner, fan, feed-water pump and controls, control panel and all necessary valves and fittings

Thompson Simpac Wood-Fired

Three-pass, conventional, wet-back design incorporating latest spiral-tube technology with heat transfer up to 100% greater than normal plain tubes
High thermal efficiency of 85% with NCV 15 800 kJ/kg
Boiler rating can be achieved with wood moisture content up to 25%
Fixed-grate of robust construction with high quality Meehanite cast iron grate bars for long life
Designed and manufactured to latest European Standard (EN12953) for a design pressure of 1 100 kPa. (Designs also available up to 2 500 kPa)
Total package incorporates a fixed-grate, feed-water pumps and controls, control panel, ID fan with variable speed control, and all necessary valves and fittings

Thompson Toripac Biomass-Fired

John Thompson’s Torripac range of new generation hybrid biomass-fired boilers was developed in response to the growing global trend towards greater use of environmentally-friendly fuel sources for the generation of process steam.

Fuels Burnt

Wood pellets, woodchips, wood-pucks, grape pomace, nutshells, sunflower seed husks, corncobs, dried hops and torrefied biomass.

Boiler Design

The Torripac conforms with the European Standards design codes for watertube and firetube boilers.

The twin stoker models combine an external water-cooled furnace with a firetube boiler to effectively combust biomass with a moisture content of up to 40%, or other suitable solid fuels.

In the single stoker models, the water-cooled furnace is integral to the firetube boiler.

The combustion system comprises the well proven Thompson Triumph chaingrate stoker, and a vibrating or step grate, depending on the fuel being burned.

Over-fire air and secondary air is strategically introduced into the furnace to optimise the combustion process. Water-cooled baffles inside the furnace maximise heat transfer surface. The baffles also guide the flow of gas to extend residence time in the furnace.

Efficiency is enhanced in the firetube boiler through the use of our spiral-tube technology.

The Torripac boiler has been designed as easily transportable modules that are simply assembled with limited on-site welding. The Torripac is fully compatible with our standard range of ancillary equipment.

Steam Output

Steam output from the Torripac boiler range is from 1 000 kg/h to 13 000 kg/h. Design pressures of up to 32 bar are available to be used in conjunction with saturated steam screw expanders for cogeneration applications. For higher power outputs, superheaters can be incorporated into the design for use with steam turbines.

Waste-Heat Boilers

Waste heat minimisation and recovery are two of the most effective ways to reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing heat loss not only lowers energy and maintenance costs, but can also minimise emissions of air pollutants and improve the productivity of furnaces, ovens and boilers.

Micropac and Lamtec Control Systems

The John Thompson Micropac Boiler Management System is supplied as standard equipment with Europac coal-fired boilers. It can also be retrofitted on existing boilers. Customer feedback confirms that installation of the Micropac has been a major factor in reducing coal consumption from 10% to 30% when compared with some older generation combustion systems.
