UBOMBO SUGAR

JOHN THOMPSON recently signed a contract with Illovo Sugar’s Ubombo Ranches mill in Swaziland in excess of R 100 million to design and supply a Co-generation Plant that will be required to maximise thermal efficiency and electrical power generation from a variety of waste Fuels as well as coal.

When complete the Co-generation Plant will constitute a power station that can operate in both "island mode" (when it will be electrically isolated from the Swaziland Electricity Company utility) and "export mode" (when it will be electrically coupled to the Swaziland Electricity Company utility) to satisfy the broad range of operational circumstances that will be incurred at the Factory during both the crop and the off-crop periods.

The Co-generation Plant will produce electricity at 11 kV for the Mill’s internal consumption, agricultural operations and for sale to the Swaziland Electricity Board.

The Plant will generate electricity for 48 weeks of the year with an availability of greater than or equal to 98% of the 48 weeks operational.

The balance of the weeks in the year will be during the off-crop period when the Co-generation Plant will be maintained.

The Contract provide for the detailed design, manufacture, shop testing, delivery to Site and offloading, storage, erection, installation, flushing, commissioning, performance testing and operational maintenance training of the following Plant:

Boiler, Boiler Steam Main, Flash and Blow-down vessels, Safety Valves, Superheater, Attemperator, Condenser, Air heater, Economiser, Boiler Draught Plant, Wet Flue Gas Scrubber, Provision for future installation of an ESP, Fuel handling equipment, Boiler ash handling, Boiler stack, High Pressure Steam Range, Boiler Feedwater Line, All electric motors for the Plant as well as the supply, installation and erection of the instrumentation and controls

The Boiler will be one complete new 105 t/h, 32 bar(a) 400°C Boiler, designed and supplied so as to be capable of future upgrading to 46 bar(a) and 450°C and will connect to a new 25MW Turbo-Alternator Set.

The Boiler is a girth supported and of two drum type with a single pass main bank and will fire primarily a fibrous fuel mixture consisting of Bagasse containing up to 10% by mass of suitably prepared bio-mass, which will be obtained from the 'tops and trash' left over from cane harvesting. The Boiler will be designed to fire this Fuel blend continuously without any deleterious effects that may compromise the integrity or performance of the Boiler.

Fitted with a CAD stoker the Boiler will also be able to fire Coal on a continuous basis to produce 85 tlh of steam when required
